When James Black was born in 1815 in Butler, Pennsylvania, his father, Robert, was 45 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 35. He married Sarah Olive Kelly in 1841 in his hometown. They had one child during their marriage. He died in 1861 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, at the age of 46.
